The City of Marinette will hold a prescription drug disposal event on Saturday, September 6th from 9am until noon at the BAMC Mobility Center, 3117 Shore Drive. We will be collecting unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter pills, salves, liquid, inhaled medicines and pet medications; preferably in original containers. Labels on medications are not required and the public can cross out any identifying personal information.
Items which cannot be accepted include: sharps, needles, and mercury thermometers. We also cannot accept medications from nursing homes, clinics, doctor's offices or other businesses that distribute medications.
This event is open to the public, free of charge, and easy - just drive through. In the past, people may have flushed medications down the toilet or put them in the garbage and this leads to contamination of our ground water and municipal drinking water supply. Items collected will be properly disposed of at a hazardous waste facility in Illinois.
This prescription drug event is being sponsored by Marinette County Public Health, local law enforcement agencies, area pharmacists, and Bay Area Medical Center.
Marinette Police Dept. Citizens Police Academy
Citizens Police Academy is an 11-week program consisting of classroom presentations made by police officers, describing their duties in the Marinette Police Department. At the completion of the 11 weeks the students graduate and are offered a chance to join the Citizens Academy Alumni Association, which was formed to continuously present and promote a positive image of law enforcement in the City of Marinette.
GREAT Program
The GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) Program is taught in grades 3 through 5. Through various lessons students are taught about gang life, reasons for not joining a gang, and alternatives.
Explorer Program
The Marinette Police Department Explorer Program began in 1993. The intent of the program is to educate and involve youth in police operations and to interest them in law enforcement functions, whether they intend to enter the field of law enforcement or not. By participating in the programs provided, law enforcement Explorers have the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the many aspects of law enforcement in today's complex society. An Explorer is also able to gain first hand knowledge of the challenges and job skills that make up their communities' police services. Explorers meet bimonthly, focusing on the practical aspects of law enforcement such as learning search and seizure methods, the complex process of processing an individual arrested for operating an automobile while intoxicated and handling traffic stops. In the past, the Explorers have had the opportunity to tour the Marinette County jail and the Green Bay Correctional facility. They have also observed the Marinette County Sheriff's Department K-9 Team. The Explorers have also visited the Cinetronic Range at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Here Explorers had the opportunity to participate in some of the same training as sworn police officers receive.
The most popular experience for the Explorers seems to be the "ride-along" were members of the group can actually ride with a police officer for a portion of their shift while they provide law enforcement services to the citizens of Marinette. The Explorers get an up-front look at what a day in the life of an officer may be like. Whether busy with traffic stops, investigating complaints, or assisting motorists, the Explorers always have a story to tell at their next meeting. This positive hands on interaction with the police community gives the Explorer an insight he or she would not normally be able to obtain. This is a positive experience for both the Explorer and the officers involved.
Neighborhood Watch Program
Crime Prevention Officers hold meetings with citizens and discuss how to form a Neighborhood Watch group, as well as how to maintain a successful program. The Crime Prevention Unit is working on getting all the blocks in the city as part of the Neighborhood Watch Program.
Marina Watch Program
In 1999 the Crime Prevention Unit started a Marina Watch at the two marinas located within the city. This program is identical to the Neighborhood Watch program but it utilizes boats instead of houses.
Police Chaplain Program
The Chaplain Program began in January of 1992 and has proven to be a valuable asset to the community and officers of the Marinette Police Department. Annually, the Chaplains turn in approximately 90 hours of volunteer service to the Marinette Police Department. The Police Chaplain Program is an important part of the Marinette Police Department and the dedication shown by the Chaplains is greatly appreciated by all.
Annual KidCare Photo ID Event

The annual event is held at Stephenson Island. The night begins with a mini-parade from Kimberly Clark parking lot to Stephenson Island. Numerous displays are at the park for everyone to look at and enjoy. There are various demonstrations from the Marinette Police Department, K-9 unit of the Marinette Sheriff's Department, Marinette Fire Department, Emergency Rescue Squad, Crivitz Police Department, and a K-9 search and rescue expert. Children's games are available to help raise money for local organizations. The booths consisted of a hoop shoot, dunk tank, fishpond, beanbag toss, muscle machine. In the past, the National Guard gave free humvee rides. McGruff made an appearance at the event also and he was a huge success. The night ends with a candlelight vigil parade.
Wisconsin Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is an annual event held in June. All participants are asked to raise funds for the cause. Officers take turns running, biking and roller-blading from Green Bay to Stevens Point. The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Torch Run is an ongoing effort by law enforcement agencies from around the state to raise money for training and equipment needed to support Special Olympics.
In addition to the statewide event, the Marinette Police Department participates in an annual Marinette Mini-Torch Run. The run covers a three-mile route throughout the city that concludes with refreshments.
